Back to the Basics

The first year after I moved back to small town living, all I could think about was moving back to the city. I wanted to be ten minutes from Target and twenty minutes from work. Constantly, I complained about this town (that I was raised in). One day I woke-up last winter and decided I was going to have my first garden. I was going to grow organic food and save money.  As the months passed my feelings began to change about city life. I realized my children seemed carefree, enjoying things they never would have if they were living in the city. Then the day came when I opened my mouth and said "I would really like to buy a farm." I couldn't believe I said it. A few months later my jawed dropped when I said " I'm going to raise chickens", and I hate birds! I feel like I've become bumpkinfied (yes I made up this word)!

Anyway...

Now, I really enjoy reading books about gardening, raising chickens and other down-home-livin things. Recently, I read Back to the Basics by Andrea Chesman. I recommend this book if you're looking for basic living. This is an easy read and condenses a lot of information.  Chickens, gardening, composting, canning and beehives are some of the subjects covered. Back to the Basics is available at Barnes and Noble for $17.29.

Have a good night.

Oooh a new book to read!!! That looks like a keeper. A few others you might like to check out: Forgotten Skills of Cooking by Darina Allen (includes sections on preserving food, chickens, etc) and The Backyard Homestead by Carleen Madigan. I cannot wait until we can get out of the city...
