Thrifty Junk Thursday no.2

I have two items tonight, both from yard sales.

The first item is a set of stackable enamel storage containers from a vintage refrigerator (per seller).

The other item is a galvanized bucket (which I will have to tell you on a later date how I was harassed by this seller).

Each item was $3.
Pretty good deal.

I will not be posting tomorrow.
FYI
Labor Day weekend is the biggest weekend for sales. I'm planning on finding lots of junk (as long as the rain stays away). Can't wait to report back!

Don't forget Lilly

Yesterday was Lilly's first day back to preschool. She was very concerned she wouldn't make a post (like her sister). Lilly said "...make sure there are some words about me". I promised her there would be.

One year ago.

Wasn't she so cute. I could just squeeze her!

Today.

It's amazing how fast kids lose the baby look (it just kills me).
Last year she clung to me when I dropped her off. Not yesterday. She didn't even care that I left.
I guess she's becoming independent.
I'm so proud of her!

Have a great day!

I have waited years!

The Country Living Fair

Every year something happens and I cannot attend. This year nothing is stopping me! I even took a vacation day from work.
I can't wait!

Have a great day!

Green Beans

I had these delicious green beans at a dinner party years ago. I loved them so much that I started to make them at least twice a month. The girls even love them (minus the blue cheese).
Now, I don't have the original/exact recipe. Here is my version. Just FYI , I don't measure when I cook.

Delicious Green Beans
Ingredients:

-Steamed Green beans (fresh or whole frozen)
-Bacon
-Walnuts toasted
-Crumbled Blue cheese

First, I steam the beans in the microwave. Don't over do the steaming. Drain and set aside.
Next, I cut  the bacon into 1in. pieces and fry in the skillet. Cook to the desired crispness (I wouldn't make it crunchy).
While the bacon is cooking, toast walnuts in the oven for a several minutes.
When bacon is done toss in green beans and walnuts (with the bacon grease).

Cook to the desired green bean tenderness.  Serve and sprinkle with blue cheese (optional). After you make it a couple of  times you'll be able to determine how much bacon, walnuts and blue cheese you desire. This is easy and yummy! Great with a steak. Also, it looks impressive on the plate.

Have a great night!

Bird House

This bird house has been in my parents barn for years. I finally decided to drag it home. Dad was convinced it needed a new roof and repairs. I refused to let that happen.

All I can say is...

I love you just the way you are!

Have a restful night.

Thrifty Junk

In the spirit of making blog changes, I've decided to try out a theme day. We'll give it a try and see if it goes anywhere. Every Thursday I will share a thrifty treasure. And in a couple of weeks I'll start a link-up party, where you can share your finds.

The first two junk treasures came from an elderly woman in a nearby town. Mother and I bought multiple things from the lady (including the Coke syrup bottles and blue luggage I posted several days back).

This old banged-up lunch box was the first item that caught my attention.

What really caught my attention was the price $1.00. Did or do I know what I'm going to do with this thing? Heck no. If someone told me ten years ago I would be buying this, I would've laughed.

At the garage sale checkout I saw a pair of well loved roller skates hanging on a fence. I went back-and-forth on whether I should buy them. The woman said she'd sell them for $3.00

Then she proceeded to tell me...

...these skates were originally her mothers. Then they were passed onto her. She talked about how much they loved to skate. After all the reminiscing, I of course bought them. I think I'm going to display them in one of the girl's rooms.

I loved this sale. Not only because I got lots of deals, but I found a treasure that told a story

See you soon!

What a Change

I can't believe the change! Raising children is an amazing experience. They grow so fast. Maddie started first grade today. This will be the first time she'll be gone all day. It's kind of bitter sweet. The girls have been arguing all summer, so the peace will be nice. However, Maddie wont be my little baby anymore (she'll always be my baby, just not little). She's into fashion and clothes. I was surprised she actually wore this dress, because most of the school clothes she picked out were black. She even picked out a blazer (this floored me). Below is the picture I took of her on the first day of kindergarten (in front of the same tree).

Lilly will be starting preschool next week. I think she'll be the type to act like my little baby until she's married.

She's already rolling her eyes at me! It's too early for that.

Anyway...

Last night I stayed up late freezing tomatoes. I'm trying something different this year. I thought if I flash freeze them as they come in from the garden, maybe it will be easier when I go to make sauce and can them. I'll keep you updated on that. Canning is so much work! If any one has any good suggestions, I would love to hear them.

I do have to tell you the Roma tomatoes are my favorite to work with. They have grown beautifully, minimal seeds to remove and skins come off easy.

Have a restful day!

Surprise! New Look

To get myself jump started with blogging again, I decided it was time for a new look. The bicycle header has been in place for two years. When I saw the new Rented Cottage upgrade, I have to admit there was a little twinge of pain in my heart. I know someday we'll see her again (I may have to add her to the sidebar).

I do want to thank Michelle over at

I'm really excited!

See you tomorrow!
